Timo Furuholm (born 1987) is a social sciences student from Turku and a former professional footballer who has played for clubs including FC Inter and the German side Hallescher FC. He is serving his first term as a Member of Parliament. In local politics, he has done a great deal of work in support of education, children and young people, and sustainable transport. In my view, Finland particularly needs to invest more in education – from early years education right through to higher education. It is not enough for me simply to hear that education is ‘protected’ from cuts. As for the economy, we manage it best by preventing problems from arising and piling up in the first place through high-quality, low-threshold services.

The Left Alliance is my party because, within it, we work uncompromisingly to reduce inequality. A just society is built on genuine inclusion and equal opportunities. Equal access to education and a fair working life are vital to our success. At the same time, we must create a society where sustainable choices are as straightforward as possible and where biodiversity is safeguarded.

In politics, the best results are achieved when one realises that, in many ways, it is a matter of cooperation, with different teams reconciling their views. We must be able to negotiate with others on the basis of our own values and principles. Thanks to my career in team sports, I have learnt to reconcile the views of people from different cultures and backgrounds.
