The Left Alliance’s party congress

The party congress is the highest decision-making body of the Left Alliance and is held every three years. In the party congress, members discuss and decide on the party’s policies, programmes and other important matters. The party congress also selects the party leadership for the period between party congresses and discusses the initiatives made to it.

Frequently asked questions

The next party congress of the Left Alliance will be held between 14 and 23 November 2025. The party congress will begin with a remote session on Friday, 14 November, at 16.00. This allows the committees of the meeting to continue working remotely after the end of the party congress on that evening. People can participate in the remote session from home or another suitable place.

A traditional party congress weekend will be held between 21 and 23 November in Cultural House Martinus at Vantaa (Martinlaaksontie 36). The party’s new leadership will be elected, and the target programmes and new rules will be decided on during the weekend.

The party congress representatives have the right to vote during the party congress. 300 representatives are elected through a member election covering each district and based on the party’s total number of members.

At the start of the party congress, the party selects committees to deal with the target programme, rules and party congress initiatives, as well as a party congress committee to deal with the selection of candidates. The committees will work in the remote meetings from 15 to 19 November and, if necessary, in Vantaa from 21 and 23 November. We recommend you to consider in advance whether you are interested in working in the committee as a member or chairperson if you are elected as a party congress representative. Make sure your district organisation learns about your interest at the latest by the end of the party congress representative elections.

You can also participate in the party congress as a volunteer or supporter / observer. Volunteers participate in implementing the party congress in advance at agreed times by offering advise or guidance or by arranging seats, for example.

You can follow the live session of the party congress online or at the premise. However, we reserve the right of priority for party representatives and those who work with the party congress if a large number of supporters arrive. The party board is elected in the party congress. In addition to the chairperson and the first, second and third vice-chairpersons, the party board has twelve other members and four general deputy representatives.

The party board is tasked with leading and organising the party’s national work. The party board decides, for example, how national election campaigns will be structured, what strategic financial targets will be set and how party personnel will be recruited. In practice, the party board is responsible for the policy of political work and party activities, the implementation of which is the responsibility of the party secretary, the party office and the party bureau.

The party board convenes approximately every two weeks. Meetings are often held remotely, but live meetings are also held multiple times a year.

The weekend for planning the new party board will be held from 13 to 14 December, so please book the dates to your calendar in advance.

In addition to the chairperson, the party congress selects the party’s first, second and third vice-chairpersons, who will act as vice-chairpersons of the party board.

If more than one person is nominated as party chairperson before 16.00 on 1 October 2025, an advisory vote among members will be held for the chairperson. For the purposes of the membership vote, a presentation may be submitted by a district organisation or jointly by 15 grassroots or municipal organisations. A possible advisory member vote on the chairperson will be held between 29 October and 13 November 2025. The election result will be published during the remote session of the party congress on 14 November. The chairperson will be formally elected in the party congress.

The chairperson of the Left Alliance, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd vice-persons, the party secretary, the chairperson of the party council and the chairperson of the parliamentary group are members of the party bureau. The party bureau prepares the party’s policies and other statements, the meetings of the party board and party council, as well as other tasks delegated by the party board. The party bureau regularly processes the party’s financial and personnel matters and provides instructions and support for the party secretary.

Before the party congress, districts will arrange candidate panels for the chairperson and vice-chairperson candidates.

If you are applying for the chair, please book the dates to your calendar in advance. The party will compensate trips to the events and, to account for the various life situations of the candidates, will provide the opportunity to participate remotely.
